Registration of Existing Hindu Marriages

(Section 56 of the Marriage Act, 2014)

These are marriages between persons who at the time of marriage professed the Hindu faith and the marriage performed in accordance with the Hindu religious rituals governed under the repealed Hindu Marriage and Divorce Act, Cap 157.

 

Before you fill the online application form found at https://www.ecitizen.go.ke,

ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS READY FOR ATTACHING/ UPLOADING:

  • A certified copy of the Marriage Certificate issued under Cap 157 (Certification to be done by the Hindu Council or the Sikh Supreme Council);
  • A forwarding letter from the Hindu Council of Kenya or the Sikh Supreme Council;
  • A letter from the temple confirming that the marriage took place;
  • Copies of identification documents (Valid Passports or National Identification Cards);
  • Certificate of Registration as a Citizen of Kenya where needed (Foreign Nationals born outside Kenya but have obtained Kenyan citizenship through registration);
  • If a holder of an Indian passport, either a Certificate of No Impediment or a Letter of Surrender of Passport to the Indian High Commission; and
  • Coloured Passport Photo (1 each)

After submission of the application, both Parties are required to book an appointment on the e-citizen online platform and appear before the Registrar of Marriages for submission of original documents and interview.

Upon approval, the applicants will be required to pay a fee of Kshs. 3,900/= on the e-citizen online platform.

Timelines:  Within 14 days from the date of payment.

Registration of New and Existing Customary Marriages

These are marriages celebrated in accordance with the customs of the communities of one or both of the parties to the intended marriage.

The registration of a customary marriage is only applicable to Kenyans who have undertaken the necessary rituals under the respective African Customary Law.

Registration of Existing Customary Marriages

Before you fill the online application form found at https://www.e-citizen.go.ke,

ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS READY FOR ATTACHING/ UPLOADING:

  • Copy of National Identity card or Valid Passport
  • Coloured passport-size photo – one each
  • At the time of registration, the parties MUST NOT have entered into either a CIVIL or A CHRISTIAN marriage.

After submission of the application, both parties are required to book an appointment on the e-citizen online platform and appear before the Registrar of marriages for submission of original documents and interview within 7 days.

Upon approval, the applicants will be required to pay fee of Kshs 3,900/= on the e-citizen online platform.

Timelines:  Within 14 days from the date of payment of the requisite fees.

Before you fill the online application form found at https://www.e-citizen.go.ke,

ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS READY FOR ATTACHING/ UPLOADING:

  1. Copy of National Identity card or Passport;
  2. Copies of National Identity Cards of witnesses who were present at the time of the ceremony;
  3. Coloured Passport-size photo -one each;
  4. Letter from the Chief confirming that the customary marriage took place.
  5. Parties to place a notice within 3 months after completion of the necessary steps to confer husband and wife status;
  6. Registration MUST BE DONE WITHIN 6 MONTHS from the date of marriage;
  7. At the time of registration, the parties MUST NOT have entered into either a CIVIL or A CHRISTIAN marriage
  8. After submission of the application, the notice is to be displayed for 14 days;
  9. After the lapse of 14 days, both parties are required to book an appointment on the e-citizen online platform and appear before the Registrar of Marriages for submission of original documents and interview;
  10. Upon approval, the applicants will be required to pay a fee of Kshs 3,900/= on the e-citizen online platform.

Timelines:  Within 14 days from the date of payment of the requisite fees.
